Contrary to some of the other answers, you should not place carbon monoxide detectors next to the potential sources of carbon monoxide. You can get false readings. The most important area would be near the bedroom (or in each bedroom). One ideal placement would be at the top of the stairs (in a 2 floor house where the bedrooms are upstairs). The key here is near or in a location where people are sleeping. A secondary area would be a common living area (Near a den, living room.....etc).
I would buy the type that you plug in (or is hard wired if you are able) so that battery replacement is not an issue.

You should always have one near your furnace and any other heating elements. This way you will know right away if there is any carbon monoxide getting out --before it reaches the living areas.
I have mine hooked into our home alarm. If the carbon monoxide detector goes off, it notifies the alarm company, as well as us.

Since carbon monoxide doesn't rise like smoke, you can place them anywhere on the walls or other surfaces.
However, place one detector on each floor your home. Avoid locations near windows and exterior doors, where fresh air might cause low readings.

In all of the bedrooms, so that each individual is wakened by the alarm. If you place it in a living room as an example, you may never hear the alarm, and that is not good.

I would put several in my house depending on the number of gas burning appliances you have. I would put one in the kitchen if I had a gas stove, oven or cook top. I would also install one near the furnace air return register & one near the furnace/equipment room.
