Standard Statistical Answer: It depends.

More memory is always good. Depending on what you are wanting to do, a little extra spent on a faster hard-drive might be a good idea. If you are planning to play the latest games, you will need a high end video card. With all the offerings for internet service, I would not settle for anything less than DSL. If you have fiber in your neighbor and can afford the expense great!

A printer would be nice if you need hard copies.

An uninterrupable power supply (UPS) is great, especially if you live in an area where power goes up and down.
You might want a wireless keyboard and mouse. That way you aren't tied directly to the computer. You might want BlueTooth so you can sync your mobile phone with your computer address/phone book. You might want nice speakers if you are going to use iTunes or some other program to store and play your music.

It depends on how tolerant you are. I have dialup service right now, so if you're willing to put up with somewhat slow speed - especially agonizing, like maybe up to 5 or 10 minutes when you're downloading a photo - then dialup may be fine, in which case all you need is the 56kb modem that comes pre-installed on most computers.

If however you want something faster, then consider maybe a DSL modem+router (like I'm now considering)...

(These are just the internet things, as you asked...)

Try Cox or Comcast, very fast and pricey. If you are looking for something lower in cost, try Netzero
