Gateway or Dell....Dell is great on their warranties. Unless you need it for graphics then I would get a MacIntosh

Check PCWORLD.COM for comments on models and brands. I've used generic, HP, Compaq, SONY, IBM, Toshiba, Dell and emachine. If you want a PC (desktop or tower) I think Dell has the edge because of reliability & Customer Service. generic and emachines at at the bottom of the list. HP/Compaq are cheap and functional, but I've had 5 out of 5 crap out with hardware problems. Gateways are over-rated and the company is not financialy great so you may get great hardware or no so great. Dells are easy to buy, even discounted, and easy to upgrade or work on. I used tech support once and give them high marks.
If you want a laptop, I like IBM. Great buys on end of lease models.

Gateway's not bad. The only brand I'd avoid is eMachines. They have a terrible reputation. I would lean towards Dell or HP as good choices.
