Portugal can be expensive compaired to Spain and France. I personally think it is much nicer though. Lisbon is very hilly and not suitable for people with walking difficulties.
If you look into the accommodation costs on line or through an agent then you will find that for the same rating accommodation in Spain Prtugal is nearly always more expensive.
You can get good deals but they are few and far between. The choices in Spain are greater as well.
Portugal is a place where you really need to hire a car to get to see all the places as well so if you dont want to drive then you are stuck a little bit.

I think it's because people know very little about Portugal and portuguese culture whereas knowledge of Spanish culture is widespread. Also, it's probably to do with the fact that Spain is so cheap to travel to now...and even stay there for a few weeks!

Weak and unsophisticated marketing on the part of the Portuguese accounts for the greater flocking to France and Spain. These countries are more ‘visible’ through relentless summer and winter advertising campaigns.
The Spanish and French, being bigger and wealthier countries, have more to spend on marketing and ‘appear’ to have more to offer in terms of quantity.
The Portuguese are not as aggressive in selling what they have which is, in any case, more appealing to the discerning consumer than the mass consumer.
Portugal was an obscure country for many years due to it’s political regime and only ‘arrived on the scene’ in the mid-70s. For many years it was viewed with suspicion.
Many people know that a Portuguese orange is much sweeter than the Spanish but yet not many can find the Portuguese! The reason why the Portuguese orange is sweeter is due to the greater care and attention given to it by the people that grow it and it’s unique geography and natural beauty.
The same applies to Portuguese tourism: when you experience it you have a more genuine experience that you want to repeat and you feel you have not been commercially ripped off!
Interestingly, one of the most popular tourists in Portugal are now people from neighbouring Spain. In part to get away from the overpriced and limited quality of the offerings in their country?

For me, I've always heard from other travellers that Portugal is wonderful. I've not been there yet, for these reasons:
1. Lack of competive airfare prices
2. Perception that it's harder to navigate without speaking Portugeuse
3. As a potential visitor, I am not very aware of cultural highlights, landmarks etc. that would sway me away from Portugal's neighbouring country

Having visited many times, usually traveling by public transportation, all I can say is "they don't know what they're missing!". Portugal is fantastic, as we hope you'll discover by reading our Portugal travelogues: http://www.thetravelzine.com

The worst things are the food, the driving and the prices.
It is noticeably poorer than Spain and quite backward. The North is rather poorer.
The sea is colder and it rains more than the Mediterranean.
