A girl born after just under 22 weeks in the womb — among the shortest gestation periods known for a live birth — will remain in a hospital a few extra days as a precaution, officials said Tuesday.
Amillia Sonja Taylor, born Oct. 24 after just under 22 weeks in the womb, had been expected to be sent home from Baptist Children's Hospital on Tuesday.

Doctors say Amillia is among the few babies known to have survived after a gestation of fewer than 22 weeks. She was just 9 1/2 inches long and weighed less than 10 ounces when she was delivered by Caesarean section. Full-term births come after 37 to 40 weeks.

Amillia, the first child for Eddie and Sonja Taylor of Homestead, now weighs 4 1/2 pounds and is just over 15 1/2 inches long.

the earilest case was born this last Oct. at 20 weeks! The doctors thought she was 23 weeks and tried to save her. She didn't seem 23 weeks and so the found out the conception date was later (according to the basic measurment that they would use in the unltrasound). Anyway the girl lived and went home yesterday. It was the youngest baby recorded to live and was a miracle.. that is impossible!!! Normally at 23 weeks your baby has a chance. At 24 weeks they have 54 % chance. Premature babies often have health problems or diablitiies though their life. this baby girl has perfect health as of now no anticipated problems!

Didnt you see any of the news yesterday? It was all over the news. A women who was 21 weeks pregnant went in labor and the baby survived. Granted, it was probably a miricle, but that was the earliest.

Just heard a baby in Florida is the youngest preterm survivor, born at 21 weeks. However, the record before this was 23 weeks.

22 weeks just happened in Florida. However that is very rare. They are sooooo luck there baby was born at 9.5 inches and less than 10 ounces it is a miracle that at 4 months old she is going home with her family and the doctors don't expect there to be health problems in the future that are related with her being sooo early. Like i said this is really rare if a baby is born before 32 weeks it is likely to have several and possibly severe problems now and in the future.

21 weeks is the earliest. A baby that was born a few months ago just went home a few days ago. She was 21 weeks, and 10oz.

I worked at a pediatric nursing home for medically fragile children as a CNA and there was a child who was born at 19 weeks. She lived but had severe medical problems. She was alive though. She had severe failure to thrive, but she did survive.
