I read something about this once, there was a woman in the forties who worked on a special baby ward where everyone had to wear a mask (even the parents because of germs and all), and she noticed that none of the babies ever smiled, you know like all normal little babies. So she took off her mask and gave a baby a big grin and the baby smiled back, so she and the other nurses all went around to every baby and gave them a smile. So no, I would think that you wouldn't know how to smile.
Hang on, what about blind people? Unless they can hear people laugh?

Interesting question behind a sad thought.
I think that you will still know how to smile as it is a reflex reaction to a stimuli. It is very hard to give an accurate reply. It is easy to assume that smiling is something that happens naturally.
The truth is that all human behaviour is a part of our conditioning and without being taught, how does one learn? It is possible that since the person has never seen anybody smile, the person could express joy differently.
When look at chimpanzees, they seem provide evidence that the ability to smile is natural trait. They have samillar facial expressions for joy and pain as we do when observed in their natural habitat and therefore I am incline to say the person would.
hope that helps

I'd think so because eventually something would make you laugh or want to smile and I don't think you would have to have seen a smile in order to react with a smile to something that amuses you. But of course if you're abused or neglected I'd suppose you wouldn't be in much of a mood for smiling.

Interesting question. I think if I'd had never seen a smile one wouldd show up on my face without me knowing why or what it was. I'm sure I'd find something even in neglect that woul turn my frown upside down. I think it's part of human nature regardless. I am sure the smiles would be so very far between. I'm blessed I find lots of reasons to smile. Sure hope your wearing one today.

There was this chap who was a clown volunteered his services to the Romanian orphanages, and the nurses (volunteers also) were delighted and astounded to hear the children laughing, as they did not have reason to before.
These were seriously neglected children, stayed in their cots all day, never played, no toys, were never cuddled or knew any jollity.
There have recently been the stories of months-old babies who have never known anything but beatings in their short lives, and if you look at the photos, there is nothing but bleakness in their dear little faces.

All research suggests smiling is innate. Al your facial muscles relax when you grin. It's pretty innate. But if you were neglected and abused chances are you wouldn't do it much. So research that questions whether smiling is learned or not seem to forget this!

It is possible to see a blank un-animated expression on a child that has had no input. I am sure they can and do smile but their little faces just portray .. well nothing. Understand? Also I work with people with learning disabilities who were put into institutions at young ages and the facial expressions are less forthcoming.

What makes that question so fascinating is that I have a dog that smiles (it isn't rare I have met one before). She smiles when she sees me and she smiles when she is embarrassed (yes I know that assignation is questionable). It isn't a snarl (she snarls at one of the cats sometimes. . . it is different!). But she has only once smiled at me because I smile at her so I am left wondering if it was chance. The question is therefore 'How and why do dogs smile?' How did it originate? Does that have anything to do with people? I dunno.

Nobody ever smiles at me & I have forgotten how it is to smile.
I feel abused & neglected
I think I will go to Egypt on Sunday for a break from it all for about 9 days.
This may make me feel a lot better
