I paid £300 pounds as a refundable security deposit for a job. As I was unable to join in that job I asked the employer to give me back money. He gave me an account payee cheque which was rejected, the reason written was "refer to the account onwer". He again gave me another cheque which was rejected by the reason "account has closed" . I tried to contact the person and he is playing some game, he is not attending my calls and whenever I go to his shop to see him, the staff says that he is not there. Its been 1 month since I am struggling with this. What I could do legally to get my money back. I have the bank letters mentioning the cheque dissaproval and the 2nd cheque with me. I am an international student in UK.

I suggest that you go to the police and file a criminal complaint. (Usually they will settle real fast once the police come by.)

In the US it is illegal to give somebody a worthless check.

You paid 300 pounds for a job? Now on the refund you found out the account is closed. You can try to sue, but I'm sure you'll need to find them first and that for sure is not going to be easy. Then to do all this is going to cost you more. How much are you willing to spend to hopefully get your money back. As bad as it sound and I don't like the idea, the best thing is to mark it up to lesson learned, take you lost and go on with your life.

Don't do anything illegal......annoy and harass the guy until he pays you CASH. Eventually, he will pay you to go away. If you just let it go, he will continue to scam others. Don't know how it is in Britain, but here in the States we contact the Better Business Beauru and file a complaint. This is usually a futile measure, so in the past I have resorted to any "legal" tricks I could come up with to annoy my target.

You know were he works.....picket the place or stand out front on Public property and hand out flyers explaining his poor business practices to people using his services. I did this to an apartment rental place and they could not pay me back fast enough.

Your not his first victim, the problem is nobody stands up for themselves any more. This guy will continue to take peoples money until someone confronts him. Its not about the money.....its the principle!!!

This is a matter for the Small Claims Court. Your local County Court can give you all the necessary forms. You will have to pay a fee of about £30 to lodge your claim, which you will get back if the claim is successful. If he still does not pay up, the court then orders the bailiffs to seize his assets to the value of £300 which the court then pays to you.

BTW, in this country it is illegal to charge a deposit for a job.

you will have to go get a lawyer. That will cost you to. However if you are found victorious you can have him pay your legal fees, and what he owes you. No other way around getting it back. You could type up a letter and state you have forwarded the case to your lawyer and then send it registered mail. Sometimes it will scare them into doing the right thing...

You should NEVER have to PAY for a job. That's what a job is for....to PAY YOU!

Sorry, I think you have been scammed, if you can find him try and sue. If not, you might have to simply say goodbye to that money.

Cut your losses and put it down to experience! Even if you get judgement in the courts,he probably still wont pay.
