First you have to do what you fear but secondly you have to repeat the behavior or the task frequently.
Example:
When little kids are learning how to swim it's best to take them to the pool regulary so that they can overcome their fear of water.
Learning to drive is the same way. How do you think all those people get on the freeway every morning?

You shouldn't JUST face them, that'll just scare you.
If you face them, and it really disturbs you, you should start with something small... Say, if you're scared of heights, stand on a small-ish height.
Then get bigger and bigger until you face the actual fear! You then find it doesn't scare you.
This happened with me, I love climbing now :3 (Heights)

Well, I know it sounds too predictable but I really face them head on. I make myself do the things that I am scared of. After I do it once or twice I am not scared anymore.

gradually face them. spend small amounts of time doing whatever you fear or being around what you fear. make each time longer than the last time. eventually you'll get over it. if you're interested, read books by Brian Weiss.
