Except for Atlanta which is the south, Chicago and Detroit were major destinations of the Great Migration.

It does seem that way, doesn't it? I think it was answered at least for Chicago and Detroit. They left the South for jobs in the north. A lot of them were in the auto industry. We all know how well THAT's going now!

well from my readings on history and from my older family members...
alot of ppl, black ppl, moved to chicago, detroit, new york city along time ago due to blacks having the ability to be FREE from slavery in these cities/states...and since so many slaves ran to these cities, and began families there, the population grew and grew, and now they are heavily populated with blacks.
atlanta had heavy slavery, and eventhough alot of ppl left georgia due to the harsh laws, alot of them stayed thru that brutality, and began a life there after slavery.....
also atlanta has become real popular seeing as alot of singers, rappers, and actors are being discovered there, so ppl feel that maybe they have a chance like they did! :)

I don't know, but it seems like there is a lot in Tallahassee, FL also. Everywhere I turn, every store, restaurant. Guess they like big cities.
