If this is a question for a written exam then you might want to seach on the "British Raj." India before independence had many "princely states." The good, and bad thing about British rule was that the British found ways to get the Maharajas to work for them. Of course, as time went on the British became a common enemy for many people living on the Indian subcontinent. But even today India is made up of many very different people with a diversity of customs and languages.

India was a nation before the colonial rule though divided into many princely states. The British exploited that situation to rule India because these states were jealous of each other and constantly fighting on their petty things.

I don't think India was a nation before advent of colonial rule, the reason being there were so many princely states which were ruling right from south India to far away Afghanistan, after the collapse of the Mighty Moguls, their chieftains began to coronet themselves as kings of their fiefdoms and there were many states, all having their own currency and rules etc., the only plus point of colonial rule was the fact that a united Indian nation was formed after independence from the British.

India was a nation from time immemorial. Jambu dweep, Aryarvart, Brahmavart, Bharath Varsh are some of the names, by which this nation has been known.
Some points to ponder:
1. Chanakya brought Chandragupta Mourya from Patliputra (Bihar) to fight foreign invaders in Taxila (Pakistan) because it was one nation in around 300 BC..
2. Shankaracharya founded four Mathas in four corners in India in around 700 AD.
3. There is an old tradition of Keralite priests in Pashupathinath temple of Nepal.
4. People from all over India used to go for pilgrimages from Rameswaram in South to Mount Kailash in Tibet.
5. There have been a common language Sanskrit throughout India.
6. The common code of conduct through Varnashram system.
7. Common culture and common rituals.
We were one in many and we shall be one in many. India has been a nation with unity in diversity and it will remain so forever.

The akanda bharath, most of it is india now, was conceived long ago but the map itself [nation] was a british legecy. before that the mughals ruled and it was basically soverign states with kings and regents during that period. what was common was most of india followed the hindu faith and worshipped similar deities N-S-E-W although there are multitude of dilects. If india was a nation under one banner or a co-operative federalism then there would have no british rule or mughal dynasty. the hindu kings were busy fighting themselves and nobody unified hindus under one banner after chandragupta murya or ashoka[ turned to buddism]. even porus lost to alaxander without support from other kings. Now we are democratic republic which is a secular state.

'Bharatvarsh' was the former name for India even before the moghul attack. It's boundaries spread from regions of afghanistan in west, Tibet in North, to the mystic country called Combodia in the east and offcourse the ocean was there in south.
Proofs - Takshashila, worlds oldest university, formed by an so called Indian king is now in Pakistan. The temples of Angkor in Combodia that still show inscriptions of the Indian mythological stories...

traditionally, the territories of Pakistan and Bangla Desh have been consistently distinctive, in lifestyle, ethnicity, language, gown, eating conduct, vocations. The British carved out an administrative solidarity, which had to wither out as quickly as they have been to depart. Even now, the present India is an administratively one 'us of a' no longer a rustic like the Germans, the Iranians.. ..
