A 'fee earner' is a qualified solicitor at a firm for whose time the firm charges. The amount they charge doesn't go direct into their pockets - it goes to the firm. They are then paid a (usually) very handsome salary. An equity partner would also have a stake in the profitability of the firm, although we're not quite sure that we have enough space to explain how that all works here (added to the fact that our grip on the intricacies of partnership may be a little shaky!).
