I take off my shoes whenever I enter someone's house, so I don't get dirt/mud all over their carpet.

I always take my shoes off or at ask when entering someones house it is the polite thing to do. I would never just walk into someones house wearing shoes. I have a rule at my house that shoes are left on the porch so I would take my shoes off at someone elses house. I recently went to a team party for my daughters basketball team. Almost all the kids took off their shoes at the door of this persons house. Only myself and two or three other parents added their shoes to the pile. The three of us were the last to leave and the hostess commented on how nice it was for us to take our shoes off. Those of us that removed our shoes all have shoes off rules at home. I think that everyone should learn the benifts of a stocking foot home.

Absolutely. It certainly is a kind gesture to remove your shoes. As far as I know there is no socially unacceptable reason to NOT remove your shoes, unless you are aware of your own bad foot odor. If you are afraid you may offend someone with your stink, and they haven't specifically asked you to remove your shoes, then keep them on. Otherwise, it is always a good practice to ask if you should remove your shoes when you step in ANYONE'S home no matter how comfortable they make you feel.

I would take off my shoes and put my feet on the couch too. Then I would go to the refig and get a cool drink. Then when I leave I put my shoes back on clean up my mess and say Thank you.

You have run into a real cultural roadblock here. I think you need to reword your question. In most cultures, you must take off your shoes when you enter a person's house. In Asia, you even take off your shoes when you enter many businesses and even some schools.

I always take my shoes off upon entering someone's home. I wish everyone would do that when they come into my home. I hate cleaning up someone's mess and getting all that gunk they've stepped in on my floors where my baby crawls.

I think that it should be an unwritten rule of common courtesty to take off your shoes before you go into someone's house. I would think that most people like to keep their carpet and floors clean.
So if my "friend" told me to "make myself at home" you bet I would take off my shoes. I hate wearing shoes anyway! Cumbersome, loathsome things... Ick!

hmmm, that depends. You got stinky feet??Then no. Ohterwise yes. Oh and um, if you're friend is asian then definetely take 'em off. I once had a Korean friend and I always had to take off my shoes at her house. They view it as a sign of respect and submission to the rules of their house. Cool huh?

I always take my shoes off at friends' houses because I don't like to get mud and dirt all over the carpet.
