I get people sending me HTML files thinking they are doing me a favor. I don't get it; any text can be copied and pasted into a website. Why do people turn text into an HTML doc? My guess is they think if they do this people will think they are more knowledgeable about the Internet, but turning word docs into html adds unnecessary code. Am I missing something? Aren’t they taking an unnecessary step?

But if they sent it as text in the body of an e-mail I can still copy and paste it into a website. So no program compatibility issues. Is there some other reason I'm missing?

They are taking an unnecessary step, a text document is fine. I'm not sure why they would be converting it to an HTML other than to make sure that someone can open it because not everyone has MS Word.

There is much less overhead with text than, say, MS Word. Text also appears simpler than HTML when viewed as text. But, for a bit of overhead, in the form of ,lots of functionality is enabled such as links to other documents and import of pictures and other media.
HTML has been modified a bit over the years to more strictly be defined and interpreted as an XML language (eXtensible Markup Language). This means in part, that web browser rendering can be more standardized than in the past and that automated interpretation of content can be accommodated, e.g. so that searching can give better results than "there are 450,000 documents that match your search terms".

You don't say which version of Adobe Acrobat software you have. If you just have Adobe reader, then you can't do the conversion. You need Adobe Standard in order to be able to do that, which you have to purchase. If you have that version, and since converting from Word to pdf is considered a print function, choose File > Print (or Ctrl P), and where you select a printer, click on the arrow and choose Adobe pdf. That will actually create your pdf document (not print it).

if you have a word doc, you have to open it or save it which requires downloading. that can take a while on some peoples systems. html is easier and faster to load.

Most do it so that they can be viewed in a web browser. They will open just fine in Microsoft Word too. I think people might just enjoy trying to be creative.
