I bought a small cactus from Wal-Mart. I have a very Black thumb and don't want to kill the poor thing but it needs to be repotted! I bought regular Miracle-Gro plant soil. Will this work well? Is there anything else I can do to prevent myself from killing it? I can't spend much money and don't have many resorces.

Do not use Miracle grow soil. You need the soil that is particular for cactus. It is sold at most nurseries and even WalMart. Gently remove the plant from the overgrown container. Use gloves. Have your new pot about 1/2 full of the cactus mix. Spread the roots out across the soil in the new pot. Backfill with the soil from the old container. Gently rasie the plant as you fill in the dirt. Bring the base of the plant close to the top of the new pot. Do a gentle watering and keep the plant out of direct sunlight for a couple of days until the transplant shock is over. Do not overwater for the first month or so after the transplant.

Buy a small bag of cactus potting soil at WalMart and repot your cactus. Water about once or twice a month but do not soak. Make sure it gets plenty of sunshine and it should live for years. The key is not to overwater it. Keep it dry!

Cactus dosen't grow in rich soil in the wild. It would do better in sand. The base and roots won't rot.
