It is a constant battle in our house.

It is quite simply a matter of displacement and a good example of a star network. As you're loading a dishwasher, you are collecting items from several locations, but storing it in one location (as if all your friends were to upload their pictures on MySpace (or, more appropriately, Faceparty). That means you can see all their pictures in a collected place, without faffing about and without a lot of effort).

When unloading the dishwasher, the opposite happens: You are distributing from the hub of the star network, from one location, to many. All the pots go on one shelf, all the knives go somewhere, and all the cups go somewhere else again. The logistical effort involved with recognising an item, remembering where it goes, then moving it there, is far larger than just collecting it all in a single place.

A similar model can be seen within the post office: When collecting the mail from post boxes, the postman just throws it all into a sack: it's all going to the same place, which is the sorting office, so it doesn't matter which order it is in. When distributing the letters, however, he has to read every single address, make sure it ends up in the right letterbox, and all that jazz. Which takes a hell of a lot more time.

I hope this helps!

I guess because you load it one or two things at a time. And you have to unload the whole thing at the same time so it's more overwhelming when you open up a full dishwasher that needs to be unloaded.
Here is a neat little trick we do at our house - put all the forks together in one bin, spoons in another and knives in a third and then you don't have to pick through them when you put them away. Just pull them out and plop them into the holder!

I know during the day I get everything I need at the moment out of the dishwasher that a way when I empty it later I won't have as much to put away. Kinda like laundry, don't mind washing and folding but I hate to put it away.

I tend to spill the excess water all over me, from the bowl edges and the cups... ugh...
You're lucky you have someone to battle over it with. If I don't do it, it doesn't get done in my house!
Now, I'd love it if I could train my kids to put their own dishes in the dishwasher when it's NOT full of clean dishes... They're good for that one... lol
;o)

Loading requires less organization, and happens a little bit at a time.

Everyone can be responsible for "their" dish after dinner. When the washed it isn't anyone's dish in particular, so they don't feel as obligated to it.

For some reason I don't care if I break a dirty glass or dish. A clean one must be handled gently. I am seeking help.

For the same reason that packing for a trip is more fun than unpacking! =p

If your cabinets are disorganized or over stuffed, then that's probably the culprit.

Why are there so many questions about dishes this morning?
