It's not exactly stealing. Most times it's a show of respect for the original city (i.e. Athens was a center of great culture, art, and philosphy. We want to be like that too, so let's call ourselves Athens so we don't forget...) or to remind people of a home they've left.

Re-using names is a way to show respect and to help keep old cultures and memories alive. Think about it: how many -people- do you know who are named after a grandparent or other relative?

When the East Coast and the South were first settled, people named cities and towns after places back home, or put a "New" in front of the name. Basically, they brought their own history with them.

New places are named like babies are named - for a family member, the place the family came from originally, the name someone liked in a book they read, or they just make them up on the spot. It's hard to say why any one place was named after another place.

People create places that reflect their culture, and this includes the name. The U.S. has more "copied" or non-unique place names because we are a nation created by immigrants. Although there are many examples of First Nations place names, they are mostly for physical features, because Europeans have dominated the construction of the city infrastructure.

The east coast and the south are guilty of this. Out west we kind of make up our own names or use Indian or Spanish words.

It's because they are usually pretty, scenic areas and the people who name the US cities want to get that effect by association.

Such as Venice Beach, Verona Beach, etc.
