My daughter's fontanelle was sunken this morning and now I'm freaking out! Ever since she started solid foods, I've been nervous. She was formerly exclusively BF until six months, and then I introduced solids. Now she takes in two solid meals a day and the milk intake went down to maybe 4 liquid servings a day. Problem is when she was drinking BM, that's how she got her fluids - i never had to worry about it because my body took care of everything. Now with teh sunken head she obviously needs fluids. What should I do? She doesn't really know how to use a cup, or rather she can drink out of a cup if I hold it for her. She doesn't know how to use a tippy either. I also fear that the water will fill her up and she won't take in any more BM. Right now at this age she still needs it and since she's such a finicky eater (eating mostly fruits, yogurt, and one or two veggies) I don't trust her solid intake to replace the milk. (I'm a first time mom, can't you tell). Thanks.

You really need to be getting the advice of a doctor on this. I know pedialyte is good for dehydration, but I don't know at what age it should be given. Think of it like Gatorade for kids.

But seriously, go see your pediatrician and I'm sure you'll get an answer that will put your mind at ease.

Take a deep breath, new mommy....freaking out is not gonna help.
Some good advice has already been given...DO call the Dr. for advice, as dehyration in infants is pretty serious.

Do count wet diapers and offer the breast BEFORE each solid feeding. She will stop eating the solids when she is full, but she needs the nutrition in the breast milk more than she needs the solid food at this stage. It's OK to skip solids altogether for a day or two while you manage this dehydration. Once again, the natural beauty of breast milk is that it will meet all of her nutritional needs right now.

If she will drink from a cup while you hold it, go with that... ice chips are another alternative for getting some fluid in her.

Try to relax, everything will be fine, but go ahead and call the Dr. to see what needs to be done.

Offer her the breast before you feed her the solids and then let her eat as much as she can of the solids... It's not so necessary that she even eat the solids right now.. You can strictly breastfeed for the first year, and use the solids just sparingly... All she needs is in your breast milk!!! Especially if she is finicky... Don't freak out!! Doctors say to "introduce" solids around 6 mths. You have to remember that most babies are formula fed and these guidelines are set for those babies, Breast fed babies get everything they NEED from their mother.. The rest is to prepare her for when you stop nursing.. I have four children and they all nursed for over a year and solids were not a main part of their diets until after a year.. don't stress!!!! Nurse first then spoon feed, and then nurse again after the solids until she refuses the breast, this signifying she is satified and has all she needs

If you think she is dehydrated take her to her dr. or the er now. Offer her as much bm as she will take, that is the best thing that she can get. Check her diapers, how many are wet and is her urine dark. As long as she is having at least 3 or 4 wet diapers a day she is probaly ok. My daughter was dehydrated a couple of months ago because she got pneumonia and wouldnt drink bm. They put her in the hosp. with an iv and believe me it wasnt fun.

You really need to talk to her doc about this. You can get some pedialyte for her to drink. That will help with dehydration. Have you tried giving her fluids in a bottle? Keep working with her and a sippy cup...She may be a little young for that though it depends on her. Call the doc about her fontanelle.

If you feel she is dehydrated try Watered down gatorade in a bottle

Does she urinate at least 5 times a day?

Has it been more than 12 hours since she urinated?

Does her skin seem dry?

Solid food shouldnt replace fluids just compliment them during this stage of eating

Take her to a doctor (I know you will) or up her BM if concerned

Sounds like you put her on too many solids too quickly. At 8 months, she should just be having cereal as a solid food. Also, she should remain on formula for the first year, not milk. Start putting water or juice in a bottle for her to get her liquid intake up.

I confused, what is she drinking now, is she on formula or do you pump? First take her to the doctor, she may need an IV is she's very dehydrated. Talk to you doctor or call them NOW, she still needs BM or some kind of formula in addition to solid food.

Give her some water or water and juice together in a bottle a few times a day. Don't worry about it filling her up - does drinking water stop you from eating for longer than a few minutes when you're hungry? It won't make her stop either. Call her pediatrician to see if they have any other ideas, and don't worry. You'll be fine!

Call your doctor! If you can't get in to see him/her, give your little one BM with her solids until you can go to see the doc. We just started solids with our 5 month old. We give him BM with his solids and it seems to work out well.
