john is incorrect, however i wonder who gave thumbs down to all those who answered steam ship, because that is the correct answer.
in the early 1900's that's what the SS stood for, later on it changed to m/v for motor vessel, now a days, ss also stands for submersible ship,(submarine, powered by diesel), nuclear subs are labeled, SSN.

It is an abbreviation for Steam Ship..all modern ships are steam ships, a boiler creates steam which then turns the steam engine. Steam engines can operate off wood, coal, fuel oil or even nuclear...hope this helps you :)
