I make a really big deal out of things that are probably really nothing to be so stressed out about but, I want to join the cheerleading squad. are they usually around the end of the year? What are tryouts like? I want to make jr varsity or varsity, no soph/freshman team so that means I probably have to learn tumbling. Should I take a tumbling/pre cheer class to prepare myself? If I start in March do you think I'd be prepared for tryouts?

As a current coach, I have a few suggestions to offer.

First, make sure your grades are up. Cheering takes lots of after school practice time and grades tend to drop. Most schools have GPA regulations regarding sports, so check that out.

Secondly, if you want to be a cheerleader you have to have the physical stamina to perform routines to include tumbling and stunts. If you lack in the tumbling area, join your local gym asap. let them know what your intentions are and ask if they have any personal coaches that can give you one on one time (this usually comes at an additional cost)

At a minimum know a cartwheel and roundoff. Better yet if you have a back handspring...but this late in the game, it may be difficult for you to learn this if you have no prior gymnastics. Back tucks and aerials will give you lots of extra points!

Learn the routines backwards and fowards. Many judges will stop someone in the middle of a routine and have them pick it back up at some point in the routine. i have seem many good contestants dropped because they could not start from the middle of a routine.

Be personable and enthusiastic. Smile and show your energy. Tumbling and jumps are great, and will often get you additional attention from the judges.

be loud...not screaming but vocal. Judges want someone who will engage the spectators and get them involved in cheering on their team.

On try out day. Wear your hair back in a ponytail, little or no makeup and no jewelry. Let them know that you are serious about being on the squad. You are not there for a beauty contest.
Remember that everyone else trying out is nervous too, just be yourself.

best of wishes to you!

It depends on when your tryouts are and what exactly you need to have to make the team. Ask the coaches to be sure. Usually for tryouts you have to demonstrate a few tumbling passes, some jumps, and learn a dance and cheer. Some teams ask you to learn predetermined cheers and dances, others want you to make up your own.

Definitely get into a tumbling class. Many teams want at least a back handspring and this is not a skill that you can really teach yourself.

A tumbling class would be really good, varsities usually want back handsprings and back tucks, but you could probably ge onto J.V. w/ a back walkover and a decent roundoff.

tryouts aren't bad, just try not to get nervous, stretch alot before and you should be fine. If the tech you a cheer, do it in front of a mirror to make sure you're doing it rght, adn be LOUD.

absolutely take a tumbling class! you need to be good in gymnastics so take the time to get in physical shape! cheerleading is a lot hardere than most people think it is! tryouts can be tough, with a lot of jealousy between the girls, so be careful!

May I ask why you want to join a cheer squad? Just curious as I've never seen the point of it myself.
