Final Answer: B Grover Cleveland

On July 1, 1893, President Grover Cleveland noticed a rough place on the roof of his mouth. It was diagnosed as cancer, precipitating one of the most celebrated incidents in the history of Presidential medicine. Ultimately, on July 1, the President underwent a risky operation aboard his yacht. A whole left side of Cleveland's jaw was removed as well as a small portion of his soft palate. At his insistence, his illness and surgery were kept secret from the public, the press, the Cabinet, and the Vice President. A second, less risky operation was performed aboard the yacht on July 17. He was later fitted with a prosthesis of vulcanized rubber that he wore until his death, June 24, 1908. The illness did not become public knowledge until an article appeared September 22, 1917 in the Saturday Evening Post, written by William W. Keen who assisted in the surgery.

Ultimately, on July 1, the President underwent a risky operation aboard his yacht. At his insistence, his illness and surgery were kept secret from the public, the press, the Cabinet, and (one presumes) the Vice President. A second, less risky operation was performed aboard the yacht on July 17.

Afterwards, direct questions about the President's health were answered falsely. "Cleveland is alleged to have said that he had done more lying in the period just before his surgery and the period immediately thereafter than he had ever done in the remainder of his life" [3d]. It was 25 years before the secret was compromised.

B) Grover Cleveland - successfully hid a serious medical condition: his cancerous upper jawbone was removed and replaced with a vulcanized rubber implant in a secret 1893 operation.

A Democrat, Cleveland is the only U.S. president to serve two non-consecutive terms. He was elected in 1884, succeeding Chester A. Arthur, and served one term, but in the elections of 1888 he was unseated by Republican Benjamin Harrison. In 1892 Cleveland returned the favor by unseating Harrison and returning to office for another four-year term. Cleveland did not pursue a third term and was replaced in 1897 by William McKinley. Cleveland became the first and only president to wed in the White House by marrying Frances Folsom in 1886. (He was 49, she 21.) And he successfully hid a serious medical condition: his cancerous upper jawbone was removed and replaced with a vulcanized rubber implant in a secret 1893 operation.-
