Because Giovanni Trapattoni didn't take Roby Baggio?
I definitely think he would of made a hell of a difference!

BECAUSE SOUTH KOREA CHEATED BIG TIME...TOTTI DIDN'T DIVE, AND TOMMASI'S GOAL WAS NOT OFFSIDE.
and you're right, baggio should have been picked to play that world cup

Italy didnt reach round of 8 because they lost in round of 16 to Korea !!!! 2-1..vieri scored the goal and Totti was sent off during that match ..even if Giovanni Trapattoni didnt take Roby Baggio..i mean Korea..??the world cup champions lose to Korea !!!!

Baggio was a very good player and very experienced, but perhaps at that time Mr. Trap had a good reason not to select him. He had good strikers, such as Totti (who has similar style to Baggio). Another reason, Baggio was aged already for a footballer.
I think the main cause of Italy's defeat was the tight competition in Serie A and Champions League before World Cup, and also referee and linesmen who gave a lot of advantages to the host side.

ITALY was eliminated in the round of 16 at the hands of KOREA REPUBLIC on golden goals rule during the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals. Ahn Jung-Hwan scored the golden goal in the 117th minute to seal the passage for the Koreans with a 2-1 win. the match was marred by the controversial Ecuadorian referee, Byron Moreno which he booked Francesco Totti for diving in the penalty box in the extra time. Giovanni Trapattoni was furious about that decision!!
Ahn Jung-Hwan whose contract with Perugia in Italian Serie A at that time was terminated immediately after he scored that golden goal which eliminated the Italians.

They were beaten by Korea 2-1 in the round of 16. The Korean side were playing inspired.
There were controversial calls, as with many matches at this level.
Funny thing, in my mind - Totti seems to get a bit dramatic, which hurt Italy in this one. It looked to me like he took a dive in the penalty area, and the ref thought so as well.
End of the day, Italy has 4 stars, and I think they will catch Brazil.

South Korea eliminated Italy in the second round. The score was 2-1 after extra time. Also during the match, a goal by Italy was disallowed for a controversial offside call (a goal that would have won Italy the match), while Francesco Totti was sent off for diving by Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno.

I hate the Koreans and their cheating. It was obviously a back stage mafia action. The refree was going for Korea and they screwed Italy out of the world cup. But Italy is the champions now and the best team in the world.

Yup Korea whooped the hell out of Italy. Then in semifinals, Germany took out Korea.
