I was wondering if anyone out there know a better system or best heat to have to heat your home to save money. Our home runs on oil for heat. Since the gas/oil prices keeps going up and it is hard to come up with the chunk of money to put oil in the tank to keep our home warm. No, there is no Gas heat up here. Only oil/electric/propane is what we have.
Yes, we keep the heat down and its on either between 70 or 72..no higher. We live in upper state NY...that means we have lots of snow and longer winter. We are planning to get new windows/doors to replace the old ones this summer. That should help some but I want to do away with oil heat. It cost too much these days. Thanks!

We don't have vents for the oil heat and its in older home built in 1910. A two story house.
We don't even have air conditioner either. Because we don't need it. Only open window for wonderful breeze. It is really nice up here during spring, summer and fall. The reason we set the temp on 70 because it cannot go lower. The furnance won't do that.

Probably the best option for keeping your energy bills low is to do what you have planned, install more efficient doors and windows, and to add insulation to the walls and ceiling.
Other suggestions would be to have your furnace checked before the start of the heating season for maximum efficiency and you might be able to get a small amount of increased efficiency from a newer furnace, but you'll get a better bang for your buck with the insulation, window, and door upgrades.

Depends on how you want to spend your money. They have outside furnaces now that you can run on wood and corn cobs. Something like this might run anywhere from $3-5000.00. Also you might want to adapt your living temperature to 68 degrees, this has been known to be a optimal temp to regulate your home. Homes cool down quicker in the winter (obviously) but if you get it near a temp where it wont kick on so much might save you some money. You have to ask yourself do you plan on staying in this home..if the answer is yes then look at putting new windows in if you have a older home. Also close off any vents in rooms you just don't use, heat the rest of the home your in. Good luck...

Then i would spend the money and change over the furnace and keep the oil or go with alternative heating elements..coal..corn..wood...good luck :)

Look into a high efficiency propane furnace and a new thermostat to control it. You'll have the same issue with propane delivery as with the heating oil, but with a new system it will last a lot longer. You can also look into installing a wood burning stove for extra heat in some of your home. The new windows and doors will help too.

A coals tove would do it. Coal is cheap. Make sure you get it professionally installed.
