You've been misinformed.
The ink is nothing like paint - it would be illegal, if that were the case (auto paint is poisonous).
This is not a guarantee if you get an amateur tattoo, though; a needle and ball-point pen = infection & worse.
The side effects include: disliking the design later on (fixed with laser removal), ink fading over time if often exposed to sunlight, design decay due to wrinkles (which is why shoulder tats last longer than arm tats).

The ink is safe for the body, get something that has a meaning to you so you wont regret it later. Stay away from cartoon characters and stuff like that. Im patriotic and a Veteran i have an American Flag waving, A Bald Eagle, my Navy Slogan. A good tattoo artist uses Auto Clad sterilization like they use in the dentist office. If you do it go to reputable artist to get it done right not by some hack. Good luck.

Tattoos are not bad, it's just the people who have them that suck. Just kidding. Tattoos have been around for thousands of years. Unless your friend Moe is carving into your arm with ink hooked to an electric toothbrush, you'll be fine. Make sure the place is clean with the health department and you'll be fine. Oh yeah, don't get something stupid that when you're like 30, you say "what the f%$k was I thinking"!

One of the bad reasons is that the tat you get when your around 18yo, is not going to be so appealing to you when your 30. Your tastes change. If you do get one, then I suggest it be somewhere that can be covered with clothing.

I have never heard of any side effects at all. I myself have 5 tattoos, and i had the first one 10 years ago.
All i can say is make sure that you are 100% sure it is what you really want - it is there for life!!!!

The only horror stories I've heard is when they forget to sterilize the needle.
