Firstly, your motherboard manual tells you what Ram is compatable, but if you dont have the motherboard manual try searching it on kelkoo and have a look at website specs for the motherboard they normally note what compatible rm you can buy. You can find out what m/b you have by looking at the m/b inside your case, the model is normally printed on it. Then say the ram was PC3200 - just go back to kelkoo and search 1GB(or what ever size) PC3200 Ram, and buy the cheapest!
You can go into the bios or download
http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php
CPZ which will tell you what type of ram is installed, and just buy that type of ram, but you might find by doing the research on the mb you might be able to get a newer type of ram, which would be your prefered option. As 1GB PC3200 will be better than 1GB PC3200.

You definitely need a RAM upgrade, and probably a video card upgrade too. Even picking up a Geforce 6 or 7 series card will be a huge improvement (I'm assuming you have a AGP graphics card slot in your computer)

Go to either the corsair or crucial websites and use their memory configurator tools to determine what type of memory you need. They'll also tell you if you can get "bigger" memory, i.e. 512Mb instead of 128Mb if you're looking to upgrade.

you need to know what type of memory it is e.g. SDRam, DDR, etc and the processing speed pc100/pc133/pc2100 etc and how many pins.
you can find this on the memory you already have or by going into the bios when you start the machine up.

go to www.crucial.com, they have a neat util that checks out type of memory you've got and tells you what to get.
Note: having got the specs you don't have to buy it from them, but they do give very good service and support.

You need to know the type & speed of ram (such as DDR4300, for example). If you take one of your current sticks to the electronics store, they can help you find compatible RAM.

Type of Ram (i.e. PC 2700) and Pin (i.e. 184 Pin). However, depending on where you are purchasing the RAM, they can probably look it up for you.
