My grandparents had a cottage at Crystal Lake near Atwood, Indiana and there was, indeed, a horseshoe nailed up above the door.

Some people do believe that a horseshoe will bring them luck. When applying to the outside of your house or barn, it is placed upside down. So that it looks like a U. This is so the luck never runs out.

When I was married to my x-husband, we had one and apparently it did NOT work...we're divorced, he's still a drunk, and I'm happy now...maybe it did work.
