If it used to run faster you probably have enough RAM installed. If you have RAM failing, your system should fail at start up and beep at you and give you a blank screen, so my guess is that it isn't the RAM, although a RAM upgrade will help speed things up, it will only mask the real problem you have.

As several have suggested, you should run spyware detection software. Some good ones are "Webroot Spysweeper", "AdAware", "Spybot Search and Destroy" and I have found that "Microsoft Defender" works well. Defender can be downloaded straight off of Microsoft's web site for free. It is listed under Popular Downloads. The only problem you will have with this is if you are running Windows 2000 or older. Defender requires XP, or Vista. The others you can Google to find the links. It may be good to run scans with two or three of them since there are many instances that can be removed by one vendor's software and not the others. The ones I listed are viewed as some of the best in the business and I believe all but Spysweeper are free. Then you need to make sure you are running Anti-Virus. I have never used any of the free AV programs, but I see a lot of people recommending them here. I always recommend purchasing McAfee, or Symantec/Norton AV. I may just be a skeptic.

When you get your Spyware removal software installed, reboot your computer in Safe Mode. You can do this by repeatedly pressing the F8 key while the computer is booting. This will bring up a boot option screen. Choose to boot in Safe Mode. It will take a little longer for it to boot than usual. Once it is up, run the scans in this mode. Some malicious software runs services or executable files that will prevent removal. Running the scan and removal in safe mode will eliminate almost every instance of this problem and give you the best chance of a complete removal.

Good luck, this is always a frustrating issue.

As a computer technician and having read through all of the other replys in this thread it would seem that the main problem may be the number of programs that are running in the background whilst you are trying to do other tasks.

You can change which programs run when your computer is switched on for the first time by clicking on the following:

start menu ==> run ==> type "msconfig" ==> click "ok" ==> click on the "startup" tab at the top ==> extend the "command" line so you can see all of the info ==> deselect programs such as "msnmsgr" and other programs that you recognise.

This means they will not start on startup but you can start them from the start menu or from the desktop icons.

You may notice that this increases the overall speed of your computer.

Type control-alt-delete and open the task manager. See how many task are running and if you recognize them.

If you download a lot of programs you may be running a lot of stuff you don't want or need.

Go to Start->programs->accessories->system tools-> system information
Select software environment and then running tasks. Look at the directory of each of the running programs and decide if you want them running. Some you won't have any choice (system tasks). Others you should recognize as part of things you installed.

To get rid of them completely go to Start->Control Panel-> add/remove programs and delete the program.

If you want to get rid of part of the program but not the complete program then things get harder. Look to see if there is an Icon for the program in the lower right corner. Right click on it and see if it has and options menu. If it does then select that and see if you can set it to not start automatically at boot time. Or see if it has an exit selection. If you can't make eliminate it from start up you can exit it every time you boot. You can also look in the directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and remove any file that you don't want running

Tune-up Utilities is a good program which does quite a lot in the computer programs etc. It may be though that you could use a more simple solution without making a purchase. Go to Cnet and try the registry cleaner, "Registry First Aid Platinum" and try this. I use it all the time and find it good.
Further, you can consider deleting some programs that are on your computer which are loaded twice. Get rid of un-necessary files of these programs like other languages, help files etc. You can also try compression for your program files as well as Windows. Go to properties and click advanced. There click on the compression marker.

Check your RAM - most PCs today require at least 512 to run smoothly.
Scan for spyware (Spybot Search & Destroy is good) and viruses.
Make sure you have plenty of harddrive space for the programs you're running.
Remove unnecessary programs from your Startup (either by removing them from the Start>Startup folder, or by selecting an option in the program menu).

Also, you can run Disk Cleanup (though that usually only affects HD space, not speed).

How much is your RAM. I suggest find out if your RAM is ok and is enough for the operating system you are running. Moreover, if RAM is alright then you could have a bad hard drive altogether. Esp. if the Hard Drive is old.

There are other specs like graphics etc. If you have a low end graphics card, and are running programs that need more graphic rendering, then it is bound to get slow.

Personally, the biggest reasons are RAM and/or spyware running constantly.

How many programs to you run at one time, how big are the programs? When I added memory to my machine, expecting the big things to run better, I was astonished at how everything ran faster, even downloading mail - apparently keeping it in memory instead of flushing to disk.
Compared to past times, memory is cheap. I got 512M and kept my 128M moving it over so I have 640M when I did it some time ago. I was shopping with a friend and found that 1G was the cheapest lead item at the time.

My guess i sthat you have been infected with spyware, a virusa, or both. Get a spyware scanner like Ad-Aware or Spybot (both have free versions) and scan your entire system and get rid of anything ot finds (make sure you run the update to either software before you scan). Also make sure your virus scanner is as current as it can be and scan with that as well. Getting rid of all of the spyware should help your speed quite a bit.
