mat thingys? i dont know what you mean by that (i hate common grammar nowadays) if you mean by playing the original World of Warcraft WITHOUT Burning Crusades then yes, you can still do that, you can still have the trial version of WoW at www.warcraft.com, and you can still buy the ORIGINAL World of Warcraft at any retail store, but you may still want to also buy The Expansion for it. Trust me, it is worth it.

Are you refering to a dance mat like the one used for Dance Dance Revolution? If so, then no you do not need one. Like my fellow posters have said all you need is a computer that meets the System Requirments to play, lots and lots of free time, and around $13-15 a month (depending on your subscription type) for access to the servers. You can download the game itself for free as a 10-14 day trial from some file servers such as Xfire or File Planet or even ask a friend who plays for their Guest Pass, but to play beyond the trial period you wil need to buy a key.
The Burning Crusade is only an expasion to the game and if you do not buy it then you can't create the two new races nor will you have access to the expanded areas. Also prepar to download about 400 Mb of patches before you actually get into to play.

PC 800 Mhz or faster
At leasst 512 RAM
A good video card (not integrated)
A mouse
A keyboard
World of Warcraft Discs
Internet Connection
Money to pay for the monthly fee.

All you need to play World of Warcraft is a legitimate, not-used copy (unless it's yours in the first place) of the original WoW.
You don't need any special hardware for the original or the expansion, and the expansion is not required (but it is awesome).
