I use Avent bottles and she is 5 months old and she still drinks from size 1 nipples. When I try 2 she seems like she is choking. How do you know I know when she is ready for the next size up?

If she's choking, then she's not ready for the size 2 nipples. Different babies like different flow speeds. Whether your daughter uses the size 1 or size 3 nipple isn't going to change anything; nipple sizes are just a matter of preference. My son is 3 months old and seems to like the size 1 flow better than the size 2, although he'll drink from either just fine.

Here's from the official FAQ on the Avent site:

"What flow rate of teat should I use for my baby?

Babies are unique. What suits one baby may not suit another. AVENT bottles are fitted with slow flow teats as standard. Other available options are:

Newborn, 1 hole, suitable for breastfed and/or premature babies
Slow flow, 2 holes, slightly faster flow than Newborn
Medium flow, 3 holes, 3 months and older
Fast flow, 4 holes, 6 months and older
Variable flow, with a slot instead of holes, 3 months onwards

If you find your baby becoming unhappy or tired during feeding, or if the feeding sessions regularly seem to be taking much longer than before, these may be signs that you need to move up to the next flow rate. Don't worry if you never change flow rates or if you change flow rates frequently. Some babies need different flow rates at different times of the day. Some babies eat vigorously at the beginning of a feed and then slow down at the end."

Hope this helps!

i would just stick with the size one nipples as long as your baby is fine with them. if it seems like she is not getting enough fast enough then go to the size two. my oldest daughter stayed on the size one nipples the whole time she had a bottle and was fine with them.

Maybe she has a particularly sensitive gag reflex or trouble swallowing; how does she do with her cereal and fruit from a spoon? Drinking from a size one nipple won't hurt her but it must take forever, and also it will probably make it that much harder to transition to a sippy cup later.

It's ok. She'll let you know when she's ready by looking obviously frustrated and complaining. My daughter let it be known she needed stage 2s by fussing and looking frustrated because milk wasn't coming down enough, plus you heard a lot of effort with the sucking.

your daughter will change when she is ready. every now and then try size two. when feeding her try and sit her more upfight so she has more control of the milk in her mouth and she will spit it out easier if she feels choking or swallow it if she feels comfortable. ,y daughter was the same and it just takes time and patience.goog luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

if she is choking on 2, then just use the one until she seems like shes not getting enough fast enough, since shes doing fine on the 1, just stick with them for awhile.
