Im trying to decide between the Mini Cooper S and the Subaru WRX (not STI). What do you think is better in terms of performance, reliability, exterior, interior, and maintenance?

Two cars with some similarities, but also some vast differences. I recently spent a day instructing at a track event that was mostly Mini's, and drove a few student cars for some laps. In contrast, the next track event I drove, my regular track toy developed a fuel pump issue just as I was leaving... rather than skip I decided to just jump in my daily driver, which is a Subaru WRX Wagon.

So... with that in mind. I think the Mini is a much more involving drive. It was better planted, and the brakes were much more confidence inspiring. The Subaru is a fair bit heavier thant he MINI, and it shows under this kind of driving. Yet, depite the heavier weight and not that much of a difference in power, the Subaru had alot more power coming out of the corners (combination of more power and the AWD I think), where the Mini S was still purely a momentum car.

Under normal, everyday driving? I also often drive a family members Mini (not the S). It's good for around town use and fun to drive. But it doesn't have the space or utility of the Subaru. I think the fit and finish on the Mini is better. Both have been reliable, but the fact that BMW includes free service during warranty would give the Mini a slight edge on maintenance.

Overall, both are good cars, and similar in many ways, though which is the better fit is really going to come down to those few key differences.

Well it depends on how practical of a car you need. The mini is obviously alot smaller and has a lot less storage. Price is not really an issue as they are close in price. Do you prefer AWD or FWD. An AWD will consistently be quicker off the line. The mini cooper S is no slouch though. If handling is more important to you, go for the mini definitely. If you will be in a lot of snow, you might want to go with the higher ground clearance and AWD of the WRX. Also I would guess that maintenance is cheaper on the WRX because is produced in much larger numbers. Personally, I like small, quick, efficient cars, that handle really well, and have that awesome supercharger whine when i stomp the gas. Something else to consider is if you like the feel of a turbo vs. the feel of an Eaton Roots type SC. If I had to choose, I'd go for the mini cooper S, but the WRX is pretty decent especially if you are getting it brand new. I would never buy a used WRX, as I have seen some of the WRX drivers out there.
