"Gonna be a Sweet Sound, Coming Down, on the Night Shift..." was the COMMODORES (post Lionel Richie).

I seem to remember the theme from the Movie "Night Shift" (Michael Keaton & "Fonzi") being sung by QuarterFlash...

Siouxsie & the Banshees, O.A.R. & Bob Marley have all had songs with the same name as well...

Both these two songs could be the one you speak of. They both came out around 1979 or 80.

The Commodores (without Lionel Richie) did a tribute to Marvin Gaye called Night Shift. "Marvin....you were a friend of mine...."

Also, the northwest US rock band Quarterflash did the theme song to the movie Night Shift. The song was also called Night Shift. This band was fronted by the husband/wife team of Marv Ross (lead guitar) and Rindy Ross (vocals/sax). "And I'll work you, when the day is through....on the night shift...."
