The porcupine has a very fast reflex that allows his barbs to be released if he was ever to fall from a tree. Although it does take about 5 days to regrow the barbs, the release allows him to tumble from high places without injury. A recent study states that if the porcupine was to wear a small helmet, the injury from impact would be minimal as well.

Possibly but probably not. The barbs fold over like a thick coat of hair.

They don't live in trees, they live in rocky areas where they cans cratch themselves on the rocks.
Anyways, porcipine quills are only dangerous to those approaching the porcupine from behind. Since no fall could cause you to approach yourself from behind, the porcupine is allright. But to answer the unasked question, are porcupine quills dangerous to themselve? Yes, thye can hurt themselves with them after they have been shed.
