After years of moving and hunting could I just chop down some trees, build a cabin and live? I suppose sooner or later somebody would find me. Then Id have to defend whats mine with my life.
So the end result of wansting to be free is either imprisonment or death? There must still be a way a man can just opt out of society and live away and alone in the wilderness.

There was a case of a guy who did this in a steep wooded ravine somewhere in the south, I think, and he lived there for several years undetected. The kicker was that at the top of the ravine was a highly secured federal research facility - something to do with nuclear energy, I think - lots of guards, security devices, etc.

You might do it for awhile, but I think the glamor would wear off pretty quickly. Foraging for food, doing without basics like a balanced diet, dental and medical care, etc, would make it pretty tough for most people to do after awhile. The risk of even simple things like a minor cut getting infected and developing into gangrene could bring your exercise in individuality to a screeching halt in a quick hurry. Living outdoors on your own is a lot of backbreakingly hard work, with not much reward. Your life expectancy would probably be measured in just a few years, on average.

My opinion is that most of the mountain men were not the glamorous loners like Jeremiah Johnson, but were more likely schizophrenic mental cases who couldn't cope with living with normal people.

I live in Kentucky and yes, there are still "mountain men " here.Nobody messes with them,I MEAN nobody. They live off the land and have their own little communities.I highly respect these people.I wish I could live like that.

Yes, I just hope you can find some land that is rarely travelled. If you move to a place where no one goes, then you wont be found.
However if you move onto private property and the owner finds you, well it could be bad.

but sooner or later BIG BROTHER will be knocking on the door.
this way of living is long gone.

Not any more. All the land is owned by somebody, and somebody will take exception to your camping on it.
