The technology for karyotyping (determining chromosome arrangement) was developed in the 1950s, resulting in several different forms of trisomy to be discovered by different researchers around the same time, including Down Syndrome (trisomy 21) by Professor Jérôme Lejeune in 1959, Triple X Syndrome (XXX sex karyotype) and Klinefelter's Syndrome (XXY sex karyotype) by Dr. Patricia A. Jacobs in 1959, Edwards Syndrome (trisomy 18) by Dr. John H. Edwards in 1960, Patau Syndrome (trisomy 13) by Dr. Klaus Patau in 1960, and XYY Syndrome (XYY sex karyotype) by Dr. Avery A. Sandberg in 1961. It should be noted that several of these disorders, notably Klinefelter's Syndrome and Down Syndrome, had been described previously, but were not known to be caused by trisomy.
