My ex has temporary custody of our kids due to the fact that I have no way to support them right now. I need their social security numbers for tax purposes but he won't give them to me. I called their school and pediatricians office and they can't give them to me. I called the socail security office, but need their birth certificates to obtain new ones, but he has the birth certificates. Does anyone else know of any other ways to get the social security numbers? Thanks

I am not going through a lawyer. I went to the courthouse and did an uncontested divorce.

I don't like to take sides in this issue, but it sounds like your husband is being this way, because he will be declaring the children on his taxes. He is probably afraid that you will try also and you can't both claim the kids. If he is the one that financially supports them he is the one who should get the deductions. Just a word of caution, if you claim them and it is a lie, the IRS are not nice people. They will come down on you hard and make life miserable.
As far as getting their SSI numbers, write, or go online to the Social Security Admin. to get the numbers. Just stay legal and don't do anything to get yourself in trouble.

If your ex husband has custody of your kids because you can't support them, then he gets to claim them on his taxes. I am guessing that is the reason why you want the ss numbers. I'm sorry, but that is just the way it is. It's a new law for the 2006 tax year. The custodial parent gets to claim the kids. For you to do it, you would need to have him sign the rights over to you. I'm guessing he won't do this since he has custody and is raising them now. He deserves any refund or credit to help raise them.
Sorry, it's just the truth. When you get yourself back on your feet and can afford to take the kids, then you can claim them next year.

You can request the birth certificates on line. It cost about 12.00 plus shipping, or print out the application and mail it in.

You can get copies of their birth certificates by going to a vital statistics office. You can also get copies of previosu tax returns check out this link:

my rents are divorced to and they can never get along either, my suggestion would be to call your kids (depending on how old they are) and aske them if they can get their social security numbers for their mom, they can tell him that it's not because they want to leave him and go to you but because they want to be able to spend time with both of you, try having your time with your kids split up, like you get them for however many months and then he gets them for however many months. Try to find a way to support them if you want them full time, I'm not saying your a bad mom for not being able to supply them with the neccessities, but if you do want their full custody you're going to have to make some serious adjustments for them, not just for yourself. I wish you the best of luck with your ex and with your kids.

Do you have copies of your old tax forms? Maybe you can obtain copies of them through the IRS?
