I agree, lets change. But to answer your question no! I listen to some rap, wasn't really born in the "inner city", Wichita, KS has no projects and I have and keep a job, pay taxes and have never sold drugs.

Rap music has nothing to do with how people think. Rappers don't live what they rap about. Everyone in America would be in jail if we were influenced by what we hear. Rap music does reflect a lot of reality, I live in the inner city, I listen to rap and hip hop, and I have never been in any trouble. It's just music.

There are a lot of rappers that never lived the "ghetto life"... they are just making money.. Most have college degrees and are happily married, good fathers and would never allow their children to listen to or buy their music... Its all about the money... anyone can grab a mike and talk about guns and drugs... and since drugs and thugs rhyme...that could be a good start of writing a few lyrics... its all about elementary poetry... But even though I didn't really agree with all of Tupac's language, to me he was Hip Hop's truest poet to date... He lived that life, did not glamorize it, said all the time how he hated it, and so forth... Jay-Z , Nas, and Kanye West are a few that don't make ghetto living seem all that appealing, they are more like examples of "I did this, I've been through this, don't do it cause nothing good will come of it" but no one listens to the message behing the music, kids think "well if I live this way, I might end up like them" ... Have you ever listened to any of the rap lyrics of these rappers? Forget Snoop and Master P... they're not all that intelligent, its all about the money with them, but look at the ones who seem to care, the ones donating to charities and to aide Africa... even though I don't listen to rap, I don't care much for the music, the beats and the terse way they spit out the verses... I can at least say not all of them are spreading negativity...
But you also have to ask the same question to punk rock and emo (come on kids, lets be depressed and morn the deaths of our friends... suicides for everyone! I love emo, by the way)
You have so much negativity out there that cannot be blamed solely on rap music...Oh, and please let's not forget Marilyn Manson.. (who I totally adore by the way...) wasn't he to blame for the school shootings and such? I guess people have found something new to blame for the corruption of youth! Let us all celebrate the coming of a new age! Its redundant... the old folks back in the fifties blamed rock for the aggresive gyrating of their kids' hips and new vocab lingo, the 60's blamed the new wave of hippie folk music for increased drug use... there is always someone to blame...
