The Departed was an excellent movie, but I too found the ending strange. Not so much of itself, as to how different it was from the original. I'm talking about the very end when Mark Wahlberg's character comes to the door. Departed stayed pretty close to the original, only changing a few things but the ending was a major change. The original, in case you didn't know was a Chinese film called Infernal Affairs. In a lot of ways I thought it was better than The Departed , but maybe that's because I saw it first. If you haven't seen it I suggest it for you. Interesting to see how the two are the same and different.
All in all, I prefer the Infernal Affairs ending. It is the same until the very end. Matt Damon's character doesn't......(I am not saying so as not to give it away)

Of course, what Jon B is talking about in the earlier answer is that the very final end, after the wholesale killing is over, the character is dealt with. In the Chinese version, that character is more sympathetic. Also the feeling of the movie is that the criminal learned that being a good guy is really pretty good and he is given the chance. In the American version as is usual, there is a "happy" ending where the bad guy gets his due. The Chinese version gave the viewer more flexibility in interpreting for himself what was going on in the minds of the characters. That is why the Chinese version is more interesting but upsetting to American audiences.

It's supposed to be like they're Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, at least that's how I interpreted it. Definitely a weird ending, I fully agree with you on that.

It was amazing
those who say the ending was a cop out, you're a friggin moron...first of all, could you write a better ending? doubt it. second, would you rather have Damon go to jail, get buttraped, have Leo and Wahlberg live happily ever after? Bad guy is caught, life is peachy? that ending would have blown

Well I have to admit, seeing Wahlberg dressed up like a clown with a gun was quite disturbing. The ending in the original movie didn't have Matt Damon's character getting killed at the end. I was glad they killed him though, he was such a little punk.

It was a really good movie, the Boston accents were weird, but still a great movie. I liked the ending, but didn't want to see Leo's character killed.

Not weird,,just very different. I hadn't been that surprised with this kind of ending since, "The Usual Suspects", I mean really...it was very unexpected...though it have a high level of suspense.
