I have a Lexmark X1180 printer/scanner which works very well for everything except photos. All my colour photos come out different shades of purple - could this be because I am not using Lexmark cartridges? I am loath to change them as the colour is nearly full and the black is 3/4 full. This has been happening for sometime now and is so frustrating!

Sounds like either the yellow is out or just dry. Try cleaning the bottom of the cartridge with alcohol and a q-tip.

Sorry, a Lexmark printer just plain stinks. Next time, buy a Canon.

Let's do some math. Your Lexmark printer color cartridges last only about 200 photos for a cost of $35 or more.

A new Canon printer will cost about $120 and a set of color cartridges (Yellow, Magenta and Cyan) will cost about $14 each, or $40 for the whole set. But they should print about 500 photos. That means that printing will be half price.

That means that you can print about 800 photos, and the Canon will pay for itself in photo printing savings. But the photos look great. Professional photographers that I know use Canon inkjet printers to making quick proofs.

When you go to Staples to buy your new Canon, bring your extra Lexmark (unopened) cartrides with you. Most stores will take those in trade (even if you didn't buy them there). Staples is just plain awesome to work with. Hit the EASY button while you are there.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Open Lexmark > 'Maintain/Troubleshoot' > 'Maintain or fix quality problems' > select 'Clean to fix horizontal streaks'. This will clean the ink cartridges for you. You may have to do this more than once.

in addition to the first try (and I'm not kidding)
to put the cartridges in the oven for warming but don't let it
melt down
