I see a lot of those on the left who like to throw around this term, but what is the real definition of it? Do libs really know? Or do they just like to use it because it sounds dirty?

You got it. They don't know what it means. They cant even agree what it is supposed to mean.

It is their grasping at straws attempt to malign conservatives. It is not working. Liberal will always be a political bad word. Conservative will continue to be a political term which attracts voters.

I have no idea what the liberal definition is, but I'll give you mine. When I was growing Democrats and Republicans were pretty much both conservatives. The differed in opinion as to where control of the money spent should be. Democrats wants Washinton DC to control it all and Republicans wanted it controlled at the lowest possible level.

When the liberals took control of the Democratic Party they alienated a lot of the old party base and those people started electing Republicans in places where Democrats used to have total control.

Because these people would still punch your lights out if you called them Republicans, liberals had to come up with a new term to call them. These people were still conservatives but they weren't voting for Democrats so liberals termed them NeoConservatives which was shortened to NeoCons.

Now Con is also slang for Convict librerals really liked the term NeoCon because it allowed liberals to imply these NeoCons were the New Convicts and yet if called for this insult they could have deniability and say that wasn't really what they meant.

You are right on one aspect they use the term because it sounds dirty.

What difference does it make what Party a person says they are in and support? Democrats supposedly care about the people and provide jobs - so we elected more into the Senate and look what they did. They gave our jobs to illegal aliens. If elected, they want to raise our taxes to pay for these people's benefits. They want to destroy our Constitution and bring in socialized everything. Many Republicans say they are Christian, but they are in favor of the Holocaust of abortion. This is horrible. Many of them have supported the same issues of illegal aliens as well as being ruled by big business. Then we have the Liberals who are not recognized politically unless they take sides with a Republican or Democratic Party. So they try to fit into that peg because that's what people want. All of them are spending money like there's no tomorrow. When will they all wake up to reality and stop throwing money they're not entitled to. When will they say that there is a limit to the abuse of our country before the citizens say 'enough'? It's all really stupid - all the name calling and bullying of Party affiliations. People need to learn to vote for the person for what they stand for if they're running for President of the United States. People need to look at what their candidate stands for - not play follow the leader and ring around the rosie just because it's a Party name..

Neoconservative sounds dirty to you? Um, ok.

Anyway here's the definition:
Neoconservatism is a political movement, mainly in the United States and Canada, which is generally held to have emerged in the 1960s, coalesced in the 1970s, and has had a significant presence in the administration of George W. Bush.

The prefix neo- refers to two ways in which neoconservatism was new. First, many of the movement's founders, originally liberals, Democrats or from socialist backgrounds, were new to conservatism. Also, neoconservatism was a comparatively recent strain of conservative socio-political thought. It derived from a variety of intellectual roots in the decades following World War II, including literary criticism and the social sciences.

I C&P'd from wiki, just because I wanted to answer your question and move on to what I'm sure will be more argumentative or rhetorical questions.

I am liberal, but I do have to agree with your statement. I don't feel many know either.

"Neo" - new "Conservative" - speaks for itself

It is basically defining the "new conservative", which is something of a more conservative stance on some of the issues at hand, while becoming more liberal on others. It is rather crazy, but it is the trend. The old conservatives are much more staunch on their views, and they will not budge in any way with their views.

So I have to think that it gets used because it sounds "dirty" (or it just sounds more "self important").

Good luck on not getting bashed by the liberals! Thanks for a glimpse into the dark side. . . But I must stay on the light side of the force. . .

Technically, it means "new" conservative. The definition of what a "new" conservative is changes with the times. Today, it means someone who is so rabidly behind the conservative ideology that he or she is neglecting to respect the rights of others to have opinions which differ from his or her own.

There are neo-liberals, too. They're just as bad.

It's meaning has changed, as words usually do. Today it means anybody who supports Bush and his war who is conservative.
