Most computers do not have a setting to BOOT from a USB device. Try to get into your BIOS setting at startup to see if the BOOT device feature exists. For some computers, you hit DELETE, and others you hit F1 or F2 when you first turn on the computer.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

never seen a boot from usb option myself....the problem is, usb is not initialised until windows itself boots...try getting into the bios on boot with a usb keyboard.
so if there is the option in the bios this would be the only way you could do it.
cant see why you would want to do this except to have a hard drive that could fit into and run other comps.......remember that unless they all use the same motherboard/bios/sound/graphics etc then you will get instant conflicts when trying to boot, plus they would all need tobe set to boot from usb first

Sorry, you can only do that with professional operating systems such as Linux or Mac OS X. Windows 98 is a total loss. The license for Microsoft Windows generally won't allow such use - check which version of the Windows license you have. The software itself is also broken and won't work due to lack of hardware support. Windows XP is slightly better.

The closest you'll get is to use the Windows Pre-install environment,

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/usb-boot.mspx

or the embedded version:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/default.mspx

Like I say, if you want to carry an OS around in your pocket, then use Linux. Here are a few links:

Its quick, easy, and unencumbered by restrictive licenses.

yes ,but it all depends on your motherboards set up,it needs to have a boot from usb device option, such as when you are booting from cd rom
its also possible to boot from usb keys if there large enough, there are 4gb and 8gb usb drives, and these are plenty large enough for a operating system to fill
so when booting up press delete to enter set up[ and then go into advanced bios settings, then look for first boot device, then use (page up/page down)to scroll down until you find usb device, like i have allready said only certain motherboards can boot from usb so it may be a good idea to either look at your motherboard manual or download a pdf copy to check this
then when you have set the boot order(1st..usb device 2nd cd rom 3rd hdd, then save and exit set up and then install windows 98 as per normal, then when your p.c boots up it will look for a usb device first and if found will boot up from there
i hope this helps
good luck

As long as the device is 'bootable'. Most likely an external drive is not bootable because the bios cannot reach it without going through the OS.

It may not support XP, it may be only able to support WIN98. What model is it, without a floppy or CD, you pretty much can't install it.

very long and complex to explain. basically, if you can get your PC to boot up from your USB drive (i.e. E:) when starting up, then you can. but i've personally never ever seen someone do it, and i know alot of people want to get it done.
