I think it is a throw-back to the days when people took a job and stuck with it for life, like my dad did. These days, I've seen studies which said that the average person goes through six or eight CAREERS, not just jobs, in their lifetimes.
I tell my students that the ideal job for them may not have been invented yet - if I look at what my classmates planned to do, and what they are doing now, the difference is not that they were unhappy with their planned careers, but that the jobs they are doing now are things which no one had even imagined yet when they were in their teens or twenties. The key, then, is to develop basic skills and flexibility, so that you can continue to learn and move into new things which come along.
As to not being able to change careers due to mortgage, bills, and family, while I agree that our aspirations have the potential to become a trap, there are ways of resolving most of these things. No, we can't usually take years off from our jobs to retrain if we are responsible for a family, but many people do go to school part-time while continuing to work if they want to change direction, and since few of us really want to switch to jobs which pay far less than the ones we originally got, the mortgage and bills don't pose much of a challenge either.

You may feel that you're being forced, but you're free to find your own direction. With the world changing so fast, people tend to have more than one career. If you get a good education, there's no reason why you can't work at something temporary until you know exactly what you really want to do. Schools and parents don't do too well at keeping up with the changes in the real world and keep trying to move young people in the same direction they went--college, career, family, etc. There are no rules for how you should live your life. Feel free to experiment. Take a year off after high school, travel, work at different jobs, find out who you are and what you want out of life. Then if college seems the right way to go, you'll be ready for it instead of going because you've been pushed into it.

When I went to school graduated in 1996. We where told that we would have atleast 3 carer changes.I was a father at 19,and a carpender for 6 years. Then I fell off a roof and nearly died. My wife always worked at low pay jobs part time. My insurance did'nt do any thing for us excepet send us a bill. Now I have a house 3 kids and I can barely walk!I never thought it could happen too me.
when I was in the hospital I had no Idea that so
many young people lives are distroide every day.Car crases ,hanging Xmas lighting, all kinds of accidents. sorry getting off sobject but no one is forseing you to keep your job. that you hate. there are online classes, community collages or bussness opertunitys all around you It will not be easy but you are worth it
all kinds of stuff. when you have a job that is dangours and your famliy needs that income you get stuck. and it is mostly young people who take these jobs because they pay better then safe jobs (without) training your bosses job is to pay you least as possable to keep you working and the longer you are comfertable working for little cash the longer you have to work and the less stuff you have stuck in a rut that is only going to change if you eather have too or you want it soo bad that you will take night classes to work for someone who will pay more or buy a bussness and pay people little so you get paid. eather one is alot of work but you are not going to live forever and every day you get older the younger you are the easer it is to change less bills resonseablitys so on remember on thing IF YOU LIVE IN AMAIRICA YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS DO IT . and if you dont you wount! and you will hate it.

You are forced to pick your career because your Guidance counselor choose poorly, and wants those who have yet to find their call to pick quickly and make a mistake.
Pick an area of interest not a career at 16 if you are not sure what you want to do. ( some know at 16 that they want to be a Dr. or something, but not all. )
Look at you strengths as well as the type of things you like to do, and find several paths. Then find a school that can provide you the education to do any of them.
