The story go's that he was so appalled by his discovery of dynamite and the destruction it could cause that to make amends he set up a peace prize

all of the other questions tell the basics of the story, but the actualy reason he set up the fund was that he saw his own obituary in his local newspaper. Some one had made a mistake, and put an obituary for him and all it mentioned was his being the creator of dynamite, so he set up the nobel prize fund in an attempt to do some thing more possitive for the world.

Nobel invented dynamite. When this was used as a weapon he was horrified that it was used to kill people He set up the Nobel prizes to promote good in the world.

he invented dynamite - a less volatile, 'safer' replacement for Nitro-glycerine. There is no doubt that it saved thousands of lives.
Because of that, he made millions of pounds
even though his invention saved many lives, explosives still kill people. possibly because of this and, possibly because - in that day and age - philanthropy was more expected of the rich, Nobel set up his prize fund.

Make no mistake - he was NOT 'appalled' by his discovery of dynamite.... he was actually looking for a way to make Nitro-Glycerine safer, which he did. In fact you could say he was specifically _trying_ to invent dynamite

all i can say is that he invented the dynamite but he never wanted it to be used for wars ....he felt guilty for it and made the hole noble prize thing which goes to the five disciplines: physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace.
