If you are running Yahoo Messenger, yes you can have the sound of your choice.
1/. Open Bt communicator with Yahoo Messenger.
2/. Left click on the letterbox with the word `messenger`.
3/. Left click on `privacy options`.
4/. Left click on `Alert and Sounds`.
5/. Left click on `I receive a message in Yahoo mail`.
6/. Tick the boxes `playing a sound` - `show an icon in the system tray` - `show a message in the right bottom corner of my screen`.
7/. Left of the browse button there is a small box with a right facing pointer inside. Click on this to find out if your mail has any kind of sound.
8/. If there is no sound click on the browse button and select a sound from your PC to use as an alert for incoming mail.
If you do not have any sounds (you should have windows sounds on your PC) you can download good sounds for email alert from here

Yes! Go to Control Panel and double-click Sounds. There you can select sounds affiliated with each program and choose alerts if you want them. If you are running Outlook from Microsoft, you can be alerted as well by clicking on Tools and then selecting options. There is a e-mail options on the first page. Click that and go through the tabs to find alerts and select it.

If you use Yahoo messenger with BT communicator you will have an audio alert every time a new message arrives. I have this function.

There is a freeware program you can download called
"POP Peeper" Once installed you can have it alert you for all your email aplications, ie hotmail, yahoo, outlook etc etc. It will show a visual display on screen as well as an audible tone. Great program.

It depends what email service you are running, if you have Yahoo, then Yahoo Messenger lets you know if you have it running.
