eyes water for many different reasons, if something irritates your eyes, it can bring on tears to help it wash away the irritant. our eyes water to protect it from drying or when we have allergies

it's a way for hte immune system to protect the eyes from pathogens. tears released by tear glands wash away the dirt/dust from our eyes. it's also used to replenish dry eyes.

the surface of the eyeball requires lubrication to stop it drying out and to help remove dust etc from it.
