The projects have to be geared toward helping others, so one of the ideas I am considering is writing letters to soldiers. I have about 45 minutes to an hour to explain and complete the project, as well as a small budget. All ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

Wow, writing to soldiers, that is an awesome idea. I never would've thought of that.

I think one of the best ways to help someone is to show them they are special/loved/appreciated.

You can ask them who their hero is and why, and then they could make a thank you collage from old magazines, old greeting cards, glitter, beads, etc. to give to that person. It can say thank you, you are my hero, bestest big brother award, best grandma ever award, or something like that. My mom still has the one I made for her when I was a little girl. As a single, working mom who never got to see much of her kid, she took it with her to work to remind her of who she was really working for. Now that I'm old enough to understand it all, I'm the one who's touched by how much it meant to her.

The best ingredient in any craft project is love. =)

Using teamwork to help each other make something can work.
Give them a recipe for something like home made playdoh or bubbles.
Each person has to pour in an ingredient while one person stirs.
One person in the group can divide the material into equal parts for everyone to enjoy.

Writing to soldiers is a wonderful idea and if each child includes a drawing that would make them extra special. Also, if you are looking for craft projects go to Crayola.com - another one is AtoZteacherstuff.com and they have a monthly newsletter containing monthly themes (also an archive of past themes), suggested lesson plans, activities....You might even find some themes on the soldiers and the war. Have fun and happy teaching
