The Sydney Opera House was constructed for the performance of opera. It has three main theatres - the concert hall, the opera theatre and the drama theatre as well as smaller performance spaces indoors and a large performance space outdoors. There are also various restaurants and bars.

It is the home in Sydney of the Australian Opera, the Australian Ballet, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and various theatre companies. Its main concert hall is used for many different functions.

The site on which it stands on Bennelong Point used to be a tram shed.

It was originally intended as an entrant in the Americas Cup. Unfortunately, because of a bureaucratic bungle, they engaged an ordinary architect instead of a naval architect. The thing was half built before they realised, so they decided to keep going. This is the true reason for the sail-like structures. It is absolutely not true that the architect was inspired by seeing some armadillos in the throes of procreation.

These days it is mainly used by skateboarders.

The carpark is a really cool double helix ramp.

Because Sydney was such a back water it needed attention diverted from its short comings thus the Opera House was born.

I can't answer why it was built, but it is used today mainly for entertainment pruposes (i.e. concerts, shows etc)

Here is a cool fact about it: The architect who designed it (Jorn Utzon) has never been to Sydney to see it in person. By the time it was finally built, he was too sick to make the trip.

that's like asking why was the Empire State Building built? or the Eiffel Tower? or any other structure...
it was built as a performance hall, to allow the arts to expand, and provide an artistic appeal to the waterfront in Sydney.
it is still a concert hall, open to anyone who buys a ticket.
