I babysit my three granddaughters. Last week and this week I had to bring my dog because my husband is out of town. The dog is barking a lot because he is in a different place. I didn't realize what I was saying to him until the 21 month old said, "Shut up, Bud!" when he barked. What do I do NOW?!

Clearly I never even thought of this from poor Bud's point of view. I feel REALLY bad now!

kids pick things up VERY quickly! so as long as you've realised you are...verbally abusive towards the dog, you should, exactly! watch what you're saying!

also kids are normally scared of dogs, but when they can get along with it (or when the dog has become less aggressive) they tend to....abuse it, overly play with it, etc

if you want to shut the dog up, dont scream "SHUT UP" or "NAUGHTY DOG", just don't. instead, calm it, try to be compassionate. treat it like a baby. ANd i know you love your dog, the way you call it "him", and take care of him while your husband's away.

sometimes we love somebody/something, and we're still abusive towards them/it but we dont know.

You are almost too late now to change it. Explain how grandma made a mistake and that you said the S word SHUT not nice to say.
GOOD LUCK WITH THAT PROBLEM!

Maybe I should say opportunity, to get out of the situation.

Not to make light of your situation, but it could have been a lot worse. I don't know if you can reason with a 21 month old. Just don't say anything in front of her like that again and she should forget it.

hehehe At least you didn't say something bad like I did when I was watching my nephews and niece I was out in the garage putting a new part on the car and said something not so nice but I said it was a garage term and you can only say it in their then the kids would run in to the garage yell sh...t and run out it was funny my brother and sister in law really laughed for the first couple of times then just walked inside all good hehehe

Funny..
Now what you do is say to the dog in front of your grandbaby,
"I'm sorry Bud, I didn't mean to tell you to SHUT UP, I know that wasn't nice, I meant to say, "Bud, please be quiet".
The little will pick up on that much faster than the shut up thing.
Good Luck

Nothing you can do now. Just watch what you say going forward. It has happened to me with my son-with words that were a little stronger. It happens just laugh it off and move on.

ROFLMAO...Did I read that right? Telling a barking dog to "shut up" is verbally abusing him? WOW!

I would sell the grandchild...It is tainted and will never be the same, or you could just tell her that it is impolite to speak like that and you said it on accident
