It is located in Northern Africa, and it divides the continent into North & Sub-Saharan Africa. The Sahara desert covers most of Mauritania, Western Sahara, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Mali, and touches Morocco and Tunisia.

The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert, and second largest desert after Antarctica. At over 9,000,000 km² (3,500,000 sq mi), it is almost as large as the United States, and is larger than the 48 contiguous states.
