My new lawn suffered like most during the last hot weather,Seemed to recover, but now birds seem to be feasting on it leaving numerous bald patches. Does anyone know of a robust, quick growing seed I can repair it with. I beieve theres a seed called Canadian something or other. I would be grateful for any advice. Thanx

Rye grass fills in quckly but is an annual. The rye will keep weeds out of the patches. Seed these holes with a mixture of annual rye and recommended perennial grass seed. Do not just take a recommendation from anyone. You need to know the grass that grows best for the area in which you live. Many of these so called fast grass treatments do not have the kind of seed that will grow best in your soil. The annual rye is a quick fix, quick grow which allows your perennial grass to come in without competing with weeds. Birds are most likely going after old grass seed and weed seed. Birds do not dig for grubs, skunks do. If you see a lot of skunk activity and what looks like drill holes in the yard, then you might consider grubs. Do not ever use a pesticide unless you have really identified a problem. Pesticides will kill birds and beneficial insects.

Let's look at the first problem, the birds eating from your lawn......
Sounds like you may have grubs, they eat the roots of the turf and then the birds eat them. You need to get a grub control put on your lawn as soon as possible (MERIT is the best.) Then you can go about reseeding your lawn, for quick growth and least amount of time get a 'contractors mix' grows in 7-10 days, afterwards overseed or sliceseed with a good kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass mixture that take about 30 days to start to grow and make sure you fertilize properly and DO NOT use any weed control after you start seeding

You are better off buying a hunk of sod and replacing the spots. If the birds are that bad, they will scarf up any seed you lay down and it takes less time for your lawn to "recover" with sod than waiting out seed to sprout and grow enough so that you don't see the thin spots...

birds will prob be picking out leather jackets,a insect which destroys roots of grasses, turfing would be better.turf is best laid september to march, you can use any type of grass seed ,canadian works no better than normal seed, best time to put down is late april when the soil is frost free and the soil is warmer, you can seed from april to august.good seed mixture is 80% creeping red fescue and 20% brown top bent.

a normal grass seed will do just fine. The one youre thinking of is "canada green" ,its just a mix of fast establishing varieties designed to catch people who dont know any different! As for your patches repair either with fresh turf oct-may or one method i use is the following: half fill a bucket with ordinary potting compost & add several handfuls of grass seed. dampen v slightly & mix.Place this indoors for 2-3 days & it should start to germinate. You can now just sprinkle this on bare spots. This works quicker than any gimicky box of seed & ideal time is april-may(uk).
