This is a revision of my last question. I can start my car if I gas it as soon as I turn the ignition, but if I don't it starts for a second then stops, at which point I have to have someone turn the ignition as I am banging on the gas tank.

Without proper diagnostics and make/model/year of the vehicle, its gonna be hard to say, but at a glance I'd say that you are in need of a new fuel pump.

Does it stay running after you do this? do you bang on the tank itself or on the engine?

Need more info for proper response and diagnostics...

You will have to do a fuel pressure test and also listen to the pump when running. If very loud or uneven noise, replace the pump.
