Does anyone know of a good book or a good website that gives advice on what to do AFTER your house burns down? What do you need to do with insurance companies, rebuilding, coping? Cooworker just lost everything and we kinda feel we want to help...

Google for a disaster or fire recovery forum, then look for ideas.
The most help you can give is take up a collection of money/food/clothes to give them, maybe even set up a small benefit.

As a superintendent for a large fire and flood restoration co. in Arizona for 8 yrs. here's what you need to do . By now your friend has been contacted by the insurance co. and has been given one or more contractors to contact . Get ahold of these contractors and have them give you a bid on rebuilding and on your contents , make sure they can do both . Understand that the names the insurance co. gave you give them the least amount of headaches thus giving you the least amount of headaches . Next contact your local B.B.B.and check them out . Next ask your B.B.B. for a list of restoration contractors , they will be rated . Above all find a contractor that can ans were all of your questions ,can provide building and contents info and is prompt in contacting you when you call. Don't use anyone that you aren't comfortable with . Take your time don't be in a hurry , this can be a long process to get you back into your home . Good luck and sorry for your friends loss.

If they had a total loss, it will be easier to deal with as far as the insurance and the rebuild. If it is a partial burn is when it really can get nasty. Good Luck!
